Compassion or Weakness in Disguise? - Lunar Eclipse In Pisces: Sept. 17/18, 2024

It’s time for another Lunar Eclipse! On Tuesday, September 17th, a partial Lunar Eclipse will be taking place in the skies, opening up a new theme of internal contemplation and searching. Luckily, this is a partial eclipse and so its effects will be generally milder on the emotional front. This is great because it will give you ample time to internally reflect and incorporate what your learn during this time period.

Viewing and Astrological Details of the Partial Lunar Eclipse in Pisces:

On Tuesday, September 17th this Partial Lunar Eclipse will take place in the sign of Pisces becoming exact at 10:35 pm EST. The Eclipse will be fully visible to all my friends and fellow initiates in Eastern North America, all of South America, and Western Europe and Africa. Outside of those areas, Western North America and Eastern Africa may have some partial visibility (depending on weather of course).

This Partial Lunar Eclipse is situated in the sign of Pisces with the Sun sitting in Virgo. The Pisces – Virgo axis is governed over by the planets Mercury and Jupiter who are both in aspect with the Sun and Moon during this Eclipse. A particular astrological formation known as the T-Square is formed (though not exact) by the Moon in Pisces, the Sun and Mercury in Virgo, and Jupiter sitting in Gemini.

Given the involvement of both Mutable signs and their corresponding Mutable Planets, this Partial Lunar Eclipse in Pisces is an excellent time to evaluate your relationship with Mutable Energy to evaluate whether your benevolence and willingness to be flexible set you back in life.

The Nature and Importance of Mutable Energy:

In the Zodiac Wheel, there are 4 mutable signs: Gemini and Virgo ruled by Mercury, and Sagittarius and Pisces governed by Jupiter. They form one of three crosses on the Zodiac wheel with Gemini and Sagittarius, as well as Virgo and Pisces respective opposing each other.

Mutable energy itself is the basis of flexibility and the capacity to bring things to a finish. The Mutable signs mark the end of their respective seasons but also the changes in weather that mark the incoming of the next season. Hence, mutable signs mark the end of a cycle or the adaptability necessary to bring a cycle to a close.

As a human being, of course you need Mutable energy. Without it, you’d never get anything done! (You would laugh at the number of times people who lack Mutable energy in their chart ask me if it’s why they never finish things.)

Unlike Cardinal and Fixed energies, Mutable energy brings with it the powerful agent that we call change or transformation. An elastic-like nature that can adapt to forces imposed upon and return to its original state. When taken too far in behaviour, this trait can lead to weakness.

Behavioural Expressions of Mutable Energy:

Mutable energy creates dynamic, adaptable behaviours in us. It makes for great problems solvers. It makes you quick on your feet (literally and mentally). You can adapt your way around obstacles and get back on track to the goal when your relationship with this energy is healthy.

Given the current dynamic of the Partial Lunar Eclipse being part of a T-Square, it’s time for us all to evaluate how an unhealthy or unbalanced relationship with Mutable Energy can be detrimental to us.

The best way to conceptualize Mutable energy is to think of an elastic band. It can be stretched in any direction and when the stimulus triggering the stretch is removed, it resumes its original shape. As we all have a relationship with Mutable Energy, we are all elastics to some degree. Some of us hold more tension while others hold greater flexibility.

When you are dealing with a singular stimulus, it is easy to adapt. Move in whichever direction and when the stimulus lets up, you resume your normal state. But when in life are you only ever dealing with a singular stimulus? The reality of your life is that you are dealing with many things at all times. If you are adaptable/elastic with everything, you will eventually be stretched too far.

What happens then?

Either you fray from the continued stretch and snap, or you lose the integrity of your original state. Neither of these scenarios is healthy or good for you.

The Lesson of Pisces: Mistaking Benevolence for Mutability

Pisces is the last sign of the Zodiac wheel, and therefore the most Mutable. As Pisces is deeply connected to the Agape (love from God) and the Christ Consciousness, it holds the capacity to be a symbol of salvation. Its polarity is that it is also the sign of the subconscious and holds the capacity to be our downfall as well.

In a broader social context, accommodation has been tied in with the idea of moral superiority – i.e. the more you accommodate the perceived needs/demands of others, the more you are morally superior and/or a good person.

The question is: Are you a “good person”? Or are you a doormat?

Coming back again to the deep, watery energy of Pisces, if we are trying to do “Good” from a subconscious place, the ambiguity of what “Good” is makes it very easy to make a mistake. Just because someone feels good when you accommodate their requests, it doesn’t mean that it is truly good for them (or you).

As both the sign of salvation and of weakness, Pisces reminds us that being nice and doing good are two completely different things. How many spoiled children were raised by “nice parents” who didn’t do good for their child? Constant accommodation breeds entitlement.

If you’re constantly adapting to others attempting to be nice, it could just be that you are using pleasantries avoid conflict out of fear or fatigue. Constantly adapting to others is often more tiring than engaging in the conflict necessary to negotiate boundaries. One of the deepest lessons of Pisces is that we need to adapt to the right things – the things that bring good to everyone involved. That is how Pisces becomes the sign of healing, love and salvation in your life.

This applies to the body; it applies to relationships, and it applies on a grander social scale. If you are going to adapt to something, let it be a stimulus that serves you – that elevates your being. When we adapt to a lower order, it makes life worse. I’ll never forget a story submitted by a man to the Huffington Post where he described how he adjusted his posture to a broken office chair that he was too lazy to return to the store. He ended up with severe back issues after a year.

Reading this, you’re probably questioning this man’s intelligence, but the truth is that we all have a tendency to adapt to the lower order of things whether that means accommodating demands in relationships or accommodating societal pressures because you fear the bullying and backlash.

Essentially, the question to ask yourself is if you are accommodating because it creates a better life for yourself and others? Or, are you accommodating because you fear the backlash of non-compliance?

How to know when Accommodation/Mutable Energy has gone too far:

If you say yes to any of the below, you’ve definitely experienced instances of your own mutability working against you. If many call out to you, you may want to visit the adaptations you’re making in life.

·        Feeling unfulfilled because you accede to other’s requests without reciprocation

·        Remaining silent for fear of judgment of your thoughts and beliefs

·       Trying to keep up with expectations of multiple people or areas of life

·        Feelings of helplessness and/or being out of control in your own life

·        Sensing that your decisions and desires are not honoured

·        Fatigue from juggling multiple demands

·        Struggling with the feeling of being out of integrity with what you want and believe

·        Feeling like you have spoiled the people in your life

This is just a short list of experiences that can indicate you need to be more discerning about how you adapt to the demands placed on you. If you have said yes to any of the above, let’s take a look at what will serve you to find more balance.

Healing your relationship with Mutable Energy:

You can approach your relationship with Mutable Energy on a few different levels. I personally love starting with questions and reflections first.

1)     When being asked to be flexible or fulfill a demand that is outside of your current dynamic, ask yourself if this will create better circumstances for both parties. Remember that if something is truly good, it is good for all involved. The point of mutable energy is to transform into the next stage of the cycle – positive evolution.

2)     Are you clear about your boundaries and values? If not, define them! Ambiguity in these areas creates unhealthy flexibility. Think of the old saying “If you stand for nothing, you fall for everything”. It’s true!

3)     Don’t forget to pinpoint where you have a strong relationship with Mutable energy! Where are you utilizing flexibility and boundaries in a healthy manner? What is it that gives you success there when it may be lacking in other areas? How can you translate that to situations in which that flexibility is undermining you in some way?

Spiritual Methodologies to correct your Mutable Energy:

Since we’ll be working with the energy of the Pisces Lunar Eclipse for the next six months, that means it’s an ideal time to use the principle of vibration to purify our relationship to both Pisces and Mutable energy. Here are a few tools that you can use in your personal practice to connect with Pisces and Christ Consciousness to help you understand what “Good” is. Having that clarity, you can use flexibility in healthy ways.

Here are ways that you can connect with the energy of Pisces:

Crystals: Amethyst, Aquamarine, Bloodstone, Sodalite and Jade

Oils/Incense: Vetiver, Rose, Geranium, Jasmine, Basil and Cedar

Colours: Red-purple, silvery and pastel shades of blue and green

Deities: Christ, Neptune, Poseidon, Krishna, Sanat Kumara, Asclepius

These are all great ways to begin addressing your relationship with Mutable energy through your own daily practice. If you’re looking for a deeper intervention, feel free to contact me for a chart reading or healing!

Every astrological events impacts us differently based on our makeup and life experiences. For some, this will pass by smoothly, for others, it may be a time of the elastic snapping. If it is, there’s plenty you can do to make sure the elastic doesn’t snap in future!

Lesson of the Partial Lunar Eclipse in Pisces: Adapt to the right things!

In a world of growing ambiguity around values, kindness is becoming increasingly difficult. The lesson of this Pisces Lunar Eclipse is that accommodating demands is not always kind, good or empowering. It is so important to discern what Good is and to make sure that changes you make lead you in the direction of Good, not away from it!

As with all Eclipses, this theme will be active until the next Lunar Eclipse in March 2025. Remember, that this theme is subtle and in the background, unless you have a lot of mutable energy in your chart, in which case you have the opportunity to gain strength, clarity and wisdom with respect to your adaptability and problem solving capabilities.

And if you’re lacking in mutable energy, you will equally have the opportunity to learn how to embrace an underutilized aspect of your being and use change to create better circumstances in your life.

Wishing you all the best and brightest of the Mutable Powers to create positive change!
